**Some courses may be used for basic proficiencies and core requirements and may also be a part of the student’s concentration. This should reduce the number of courses a student must take if carefully planned. Students are urged to discuss all parts of their program with their academic advisors.
Pre-service teachers planning to teach in middle school science, social studies, and/or mathematics may graduate with six semester hours in reading. However, before their first two-year license expires, middle school teachers will need to complete another six semester hours in reading. Elective courses may be directed toward this goal and included in the bachelor's program.
The Professional Semester
The professional semester is the culmination of the pre-service experience. It includes student teaching, a seminar, and a project. Those seeking admission to student teaching must meet the following criteria:
- A minimum grade point average of 2.5 overall and an average of 2.5 or better in the professional coursework, major, and areas of concentration.
- All professional courses must be completed. Transfer students working toward a degree must take at least one-half of the courses required for licensure at Lake Erie College.
- A completed application must be filed with the Education Office by March 1 or October 1 of the semester preceding student teaching.
- The application must be approved by the Associate Dean for Education and the Education faculty.
Student teaching involves all-day participation for a full semester in the assigned schools. The student teacher is expected to participate in all of the activities of a professional teacher and to accommodate the school calendar of the school to which s/he has been assigned. Because of the high emotional and physical demands this places on the student teacher, no additional coursework may be taken during the student teaching. For the same reason, students are not permitted to be involved in outside employment during student teaching.
Licensure for Degree Holders
A person who already holds a bachelor’s degree may acquire a teaching license by completing the requirements for the desired license listed in the Teacher Education Handbook. When possible, degreed students may take courses on a graduate level.
Degree holders should provide transcripts of their college work to the Associate Dean of Education who will evaluate the transcripts against the license requirements and supply a written list of remaining coursework needed for licensure. In the event that the degree is more than seven years old or if the grade point average is lower than the Lake Erie College Education Department requirements, students may be asked to repeat some courses required for licensure. Although many Lake Erie College courses are offered in the evenings, the professional courses are offered primarily in the daytime to provide opportunity for related field experiences. Therefore, it is necessary for license seekers to be available during the day.
When requesting admission to the College, degree holders should apply as graduate students. For most, part-time status will be sufficient. The length of time needed to complete licensure requirements will vary depending upon the type of license desired and the number of courses remaining to be completed.
To apply for licensure through Lake Erie College, the student must pass the PRAXIS II tests required by the State of Ohio. |
